Adding Lightness to improve perfomance

Many of you will have correctly associated the term “add lightness” with Colin Chapman, but what exactly does it mean, when asked Colin responded: “Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere.” And never has a truer word been spoken.

So how can we go about subtracting the unnecessary weight from our classics? Well firstly clear out the boot of all but the most vital tools, it is surprising the amount of weight people carry around on a daily basis. Not only with this help the performance of your car, but will increase its fuel efficiency.
There is also a lot of weight that is not necessary for driving but makes the world of difference in comfort, Carpets for example or a passenger seat. Removing these will save a lot of weight but does reduce the practicality of your classic and for most people this is simply not an option.

Adding Lightness

We all know metal is heavy, removing bumpers and replacing your body panels with lightweight versions is the greatest weight saving you can make without removing the engine! There are many lightened panels available ranging from boot lids to complete front ends, each of which will reduce the weight of your car and help get the most from your classic.
